PERFUME NOTES

From the soft, sultry scent of jasmine to the warm, inviting aroma of vanilla, perfume notes are what make a fragrance unique and enjoyable. But with so many different notes out there, how do you know which one is right for you?

To differentiate between a variety of perfume notes, it’s important to understand the language of perfume. Perfume notes are divided into three categories: top, middle, and base. The top note is the initial scent that you smell as soon as you apply a perfume. The middle note, otherwise known as the “heart” note, fuses with the top note to create a more complex scent. Finally, the base note emerges after the top and middle notes have had time to settle, creating the lasting scent of the perfume.

With the language of perfume in hand, here’s an overview of some of the most popular perfume notes to choose from.

Top notes: citrusy and light, top notes such as mandarin orange, lemon, and lime are refreshing and energizing. Jasmine and freesia have a soft, romantic aroma, while grapefruit and bergamot bring a crisp, citrus-like brightness to a fragrance.

Middle notes: rose and geranium create a floral scent, while ylang-ylang is known for its deep and sweet essence. In addition, orange blossom and lavender are said to be calming and soothing.

Base notes: These are the longest-lasting of all the perfume notes, creating the overall scent of the fragrance. Popular base notes include woody notes such as cedar, sandalwood, and patchouli for a warm, spicy scent. Vanilla, musk, and amber bring a soft complexity to the aroma, while tobacco and vetiver provide a deep smoky note.

Now that you know what perfume notes to expect, why not experiment and find the right scent for you? Joy, desire, and a sense of wellbeing are all a spritz away!
